Crowborough League Season 2019/2020 cancelled

Statement from the Crowborough & District Football League Chairman 20/03/2020:

Good evening everyone,

As news of increased cases of the Coronavirus in our immediate areas start to become apparent, it would appear that we are yet to reach a point where we can safely say that the worst is behind us. With schools now about to close for the foreseeable future and self isolation becoming more and more important as each day goes by, the need to safeguard everyone around us becomes vital in order to curtail the virus from spreading.

Following the recent announcement from the F.A. that grassroots football was to be suspended with immediate effect, and until at least the beginning of April, the latest update for the professional game in England shows that this suspension will be further increased until no earlier than 30th April. We can expect therefore that grassroots football will likewise be issued with the same instruction very soon.

With no end in sight to this previously un-encountered situation, and with a programme some considerable way from being completed, the decision by the Management Committee of the Crowborough League is to abandon the 2019-20 season with immediate effect. No further fixture schedules will be published and the Knockout Cup competitions will not therefore take place. Whilst this decision was by no means taken without careful consideration, the likelihood of any immediate lifting of the imposed suspension of play remains extremely unlikely. At the end of the day the health and well being of individuals far exceeds that of any football match and I sincerely hope that you will all understand the reasons for this decision being made.

As a result of this action being taken, and coupled with the Government advice on eliminating social gathering and unnecessary travel, there will of course now be no presentation of awards evening. Similarly, the League Annual General Meeting scheduled for June may also now be postponed but we will advise clubs nearer the time when we hopefully have more and better news.

By informing you of this decision now, rather than have you wait for what seems to be the inevitable, I hope this will allow you to focus on other, more important and meaningful things over the weeks and months ahead.

Stay safe and look after those who are most vulnerable.

Best wishes
